India is counting votes, and the alliance led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading. However, current indicators indicate that the Indian National Congress-led unified opposition may surpass the BJP in gaining a majority on its own.
The largest democratic exercise in history, the massive seven-phase election, started on April 19 and concluded on Saturday.
The Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian parliament, has 543 members. A party or coalition needs 272 seats to pass the majority threshold. A third consecutive term for Modi was predicted by exit polls.
The Election Commission has said that a staggering 642 million voters participated in the staggered election, dismissing concerns expressed by the opposition on the voting process.
Nonetheless, this year’s voting turnout was 66.3 percent, which was almost 1% less than in 2019.
