Israel’s military announced it has taken full control of Gaza’s entire border with Egypt, though it provided no further details.

Gaza City, Gaza Strip – Israel’s military announced on Wednesday that it has seized control of the entire length of Gaza’s border with Egypt, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. This strategic capture of the Philadelphi corridor highlights Israel’s deepening offensive in southern Gaza.

Palestinians in Rafah, a border city, reported intense fighting on Wednesday. Previously, Israel stated it was conducting limited operations in eastern Rafah along the Gaza-Egypt border. The United States and other Israeli allies have cautioned against a full-scale offensive in Rafah, warning it could lead to a humanitarian disaster.

The fighting in Rafah has forced over 1 million Palestinians to flee, many of whom were already displaced due to the war between Israel and Hamas. These individuals now seek refuge in makeshift tent camps and other devastated areas, lacking basic necessities like shelter, food, and water, according to the U.N.

Earlier on Wednesday, a senior Israeli official suggested that the conflict with Hamas might continue until the end of the year. Israel has committed to eliminating Hamas militants from the entire Gaza Strip, employing a strategy of systematic destruction that has resulted in significant civilian casualties.

Israeli bombardments and ground offensives in Gaza have claimed the lives of more than 36,000 Palestinians, as reported by the Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between combatants and civilians.

The current conflict began after Hamas’ attack on October 7, when militants entered southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting about 250. Israel reports that around 100 hostages remain captive in Gaza, with the bodies of approximately 30 more also held.
