India MP Prajwal Revanna Arrested in Explosive Sex Abuse Scandal

Bengaluru, India – In a dramatic turn of events, Prajwal Revanna, an influential Indian lawmaker, was arrested early Friday upon his return from Germany. Revanna had fled India on April 27 after facing serious accusations of sexually abusing multiple women.

Revanna, a 33-year-old Member of Parliament from the Janata Dal (Secular) party, which aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, has vehemently denied all allegations. The controversy has put his bid for re-election from the Hassan constituency in Karnataka under intense scrutiny.

The scandal erupted just before the elections in Hassan, when thousands of USB sticks containing videos allegedly depicting Revanna in acts of sexual abuse were circulated, sparking widespread outrage across Karnataka. Revanna remained silent on the authenticity of the videos, while an official from his office claimed they were doctored.

In the wake of the scandal, Revanna fled the country, leaving behind a storm of public anger and media scrutiny. The Karnataka police have registered three cases of sexual assault against him, prompting Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah to form a special investigative team to probe the allegations.

A special court issued an arrest warrant for Revanna on May 18, following a request from the special investigation team (SIT). In a bid to evade arrest, Revanna applied for anticipatory bail, but his plea was rejected by the court just a day before his arrest.

After weeks of being untraceable, Revanna resurfaced on May 27 in a video message, announcing his intention to cooperate with the SIT. This video came after his grandfather, former Indian Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, publicly urged him to return and face the investigation.

Revanna’s arrest is not the only scandal facing his powerful political family. His father, HD Revanna, and his uncle, HD Kumaraswamy, are both prominent legislators in the Karnataka state assembly. HD Revanna has also been accused of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation by a former family employee. He was detained for six days but released on bail last month, dismissing the allegations as politically motivated.

The ongoing investigation into Prajwal Revanna’s alleged misconduct continues to unfold, capturing national attention and shaking the political landscape in Karnataka. As the case progresses, it underscores the broader issues of political accountability and the fight against sexual misconduct.
